Objective To understand whether serum bilirubin levels are associated with vascular lesions in type 2 dia- betes. Methods In this study, the diabetic patients admitted to our department of endocrinology in 2017 were divided into avascular disease group(group 0), simple retinopathy group or simple carotid artery disease group(group 1), and two vascular disease groups(group 2). Compared differences in levels of bilirubin between the three groups. Finally, 3 groups were subjected to multivariate logistic regression analysis to understand whether bilirubin levels were related to the degree of vascular lesions. Results There were significant differences in total bilirubin and indirect bilirubin between group 0 and group 1, 0 and 2(P〈0.01). Logistic correlation analysis revealed that there was no correlation between total bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, and direct bilirubin levels and the severity of vascular lesions in diabetic patients. Conclusion The decrease of bilirubin may not be the cause of vascular lesions. Bilirubin is an endogenous antioxidant and its decline is the result of enhanced antioxidative stress in diabetic vascular lesions.
