To Move and to Feel:On the Animal Soul

约纳斯认为,有三个特征把动物的生命与植物的生命区分开来：运动、知觉、情感。动物生命的最大奥秘就在于它在直接的关注和间接的满足之间所能够维持的缺口。出于这一居间状态的原则,动物的运动、知觉和情感都涉及主体-客体的分裂。这一分裂处于整个动物性现象的根基处,也处于动物离开生命的植物模式的根基处。约纳斯在这里所做的就是理解这一分道扬镳的性质。

Hans Jonas said,three characteristics distinguish animal from plant life:motility,perception,emotion.The great secret of animal life lies precisely in the gap which it is able to maintain between immediate concern and mediate satisfaction。Of this principle of mediacy,motility,perception,emotion all involve the subject-object split.This split is at the bottom of the whole phenomenon of animality and of its departure from the vegetative mode of life.Hans Jonas’s concern is to understand the nature this departure.
