China’s tourist industry saw its primary development in the early 1930s, when social order along the Tientsin - Pukou railway was quite stable. Qufu,as a historic city, became a highly recommended tourist destination.A larger amount of tourists visited Qufu with a sense of respect for Confucius as well as a sense of curiosity for his descendants. Yet most tourists were a little bit disappointed at this "rural city",featuring limited transportation, sparse scenic spots, bad economy, and old - fashioned social customs. Although tourists may agree with the importance of Confucius as well as his historical significance, they may not realize the tender feeling and respect for Confucius as old Chinese intellectuals. This shows that back then, affected by the trend of progress and innovation,Confucius and his descendants only existed as a cultural symbol, instead of a kind of faith that can guide action.
