Hong Kong Cantonese and Its Role of Identification

本文从语言、社会的角度分析港式粤语对港人的区域身份认同作用。香港作为一个国际化大都市,89.1%的人口讲粤语。在经历长期的英语浸濡和回归后内地普通话的强大影响下,香港仍是一个日常语言为粤语的华人社会。除了历史、区域因素以外,港式粤语也起了非常重要的作用。表现在4个方面:由言语社区的高度一致而产生的区域身份认同,与内地的高度区域互动,港式粤语对英语词汇语音上的兼容性,粤语里保持了一批古汉语词汇。

This paper examines, from both linguistic and social perspectives, the role of Hong Kong Cantonese as an identifi-cation symbol for the Hong Kong SAR residents, particularly the ethnic Chinese people. Hong Kong, as a world city, has 89.1% of its population speaking Hong Kong Cantonese, which is very widely used as a communication instrument for daily life. This remains unchanged, despite the impacts from English and Putonghua because of historical and political reasons. The paper has found four reasons for the role of identification：（1） The high linguistic conformality resulting in communal solidarity,（2） its interaction with the Mainland,（3） adaptation of English sounds and syllables,（4） continuity of using words and pronunciation of ancient Chinese language.
