Cityscape of Fengjie in the Late Qing Dynasty

1909年4月29日17时30分美国人张伯伦拍摄的古夔州奉节城市风貌照片,其以城市建筑,包括公共建筑与民居,所展现出来的瓦屋顶和风火山墙,构成了令人震惊的瑰丽清代城市风貌。其个性突出的纯粹中国建筑的空间特征,大面积建筑对三峡城市的精心塑造,彰显了农业文明的物质创造辉煌。当然,它是来之不易的。它是历史上,尤其是清道光以来历代负责的官员、百姓,甚至风水师共同参与的结果。而且历经反复多次对局部、整体的建设与维修,才得到照片上的一瞬间。可惜,好景不长,抗日战争时期日本侵略者的十多次大轰炸,使这一罕见的如诗如画的三峡古典城市惨遭毁灭。

A picture of Fengjie, the ancient Kuizhou, taken by the American Zhang Bailun at 17：30 on April 29, 1909, displays the full share of the amazing cityscape in the Qing Dynasty through the tile roof and the fire wall of the urban architectures-public buildings and residential buildings. The distinguished pure spatial characteristics of Chinese architecture plus the extensive buildings shaping the Three Gorges City are unmistakable signs of the splendid material creation by the agricultural civilization. It won its way, of course, arduously. It took the efforts of the responsible officials, people, and even fengshui masters of quite a few dynasties, especially those since the Daoguang Emperor. Furthermore, the rare moment also cost repeated constructions and maintenance. But unfortunately, this great moment lasted for just a very short time and was later ruined by over ten times of bombings in the anti-Japanese war period.
