Analysis of Presence and Absence of Connectives in Chinese and English

汉英语言由于意合与形合的不同,对关联词语的使用存在强制与否的差别。就汉语而言,古代汉语以意合为主,少用或不用关联词语,现代汉语由于表意精确的需要及欧化结果,关联词语的使用逐渐增多,分句间隐含的语义关系也往往得以显现。就英语而言,各类连接词必须出现以标明分句间的语义关系。研究清楚关联词语的隐现问题,不仅有助于掌握关联词语,还能加深对汉英两种语言的理解。

Due to parataxis in Chinese and hypotaxis in English, the uses of connectives in two languages are different, one is compelling, the other is not. Ancient Chinese seldom or never use connectives because of parataxis while modern Chinese often use connectives because of the needs of accuracy or the influence of foreign languages. In most cases, implied semantic relations between clauses in modern Chinese are revealed. As for English, however, connectives must be present to indicate the semantic relations between clauses. Making presence and absence of connectives clear can be helpful to become familiar with connectives, as well as to improve understanding of Chinese and English.
