山西省高等院校校训英译分析与思考

The Aesthetic Characteristics of the English Translation of the School Mottos of Chinese Colleges and Universities

以鲁迅的汉语之意美、音美和形美及许渊冲由此发展而来的"三美"翻译原则为理论依据,以部分山西省高等院校校训为例,对高等院校校训英译的美学特点、美学原则和翻译策略进行分析,认为高等院校校训英译具有意境悠远、音律和谐和形式统一的特点,体现了鲁迅的汉语"三美"原则和理念,并以许氏"三美"翻译原则为指导,提出高等院校校训英译应以达其要意、谐其音韵和齐其形式为终极追求,通过艺术直接传递(直译)、艺术间接再创造(意译)等方式,努力再现汉语原文及中华文化之美,为高等院校走向国际化助力。

Using the translation principle of meaning beauty, sound beauty and form beauty, which is evolved from the late Mr. Lu Xun＇s aesthetic principle of Chinese characters and Mr. Xu Yuanchong＇s translation principle of poetic translation, as theoretical basis, and taking the English translation of the school mottos of Shanxi colleges and universities for example, this paper analyzes the aesthetic characteristics, aesthetic principles and translation strategies of the English translation of the school mottos of Chinese colleges and universities, finds that the English translation of the school mottos of Chinese colleges and universities is characterized by distant mood, harmonious rhythm and unified form and they embody Mr. Lu Xun＇s aesthetic principle, and guided by Mr. Xu＇s aesthetic principle of poetic translation puts forward that the English translation of the school mottos of Chinese colleges and universities should regard clear meaning expression, harmonious rhythm expression and unified form expression as its ultimate pursuit and try to reproduce the beauty of the original Chinese text as well as that of Chinese culture by means of direct artistic communication（literal translation） and indirect artistic recreation（liberal translation） to help for the internationalization of Chinese colleges and universities.
