EAST MEETS WEST: THE HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL ELEMENTS IN UNIVERSITY PLANNING AND DESIGN——TAKING XIAMEN UNIVERSITY AND RICE UNIVERSITY AS CASES

作为开放、自由、智慧理念象征的大学校园,在其规划和建设的过程中,历史与文化因素的影响无处不在。成为世界高等教育中心后的美国大学校园在体制、模式和建设等方面对中国的大学都有一定的影响,本文以厦门大学、莱斯大学为例,通过对中美大学校园设计的比较,探求中美大学校园设计中的历史与文化线索,为未来的校园规划和建筑设计提供思路。

As the symbol of openness, freedom and knowledge, university campus was influenced by the historical and cultural elements everywhere during the planning and construction. After becoming the central of the world higher education, American university has certain effects on Chinese university in the aspect of system, institutional pattern and construction. Through the comparative study of the American and Chinese university campus planning, taking Xiamen University and Rice University as cases, the article analyzes the similarities and differences between the two universities, after exploring the historical and cultural clues in the campus design of Sino-American universities, it provides ideas for the future campus planning and campus architectural design.
