The Goat or Who is Sylvia written by Edward Albee,the great master of American drama,has aroused a great repercussion and heated debate because of its absurd plot. The play tells an American architect Martin has a love affair with a goat called Sylvia,which leads to family conflicts. This thesis sets off from the perspective of existentialism to study the absurdity of the play and try to discuss human alienation,loneliness and anguish,the free choice of man and revolt against absurdity,thus encouraging people to fulfill the meaning of existence by facing reality and taking action actively.
