Multi -part polyphonic music, being an important constituent part of musical works, has a long history of develop- ment. The polyphonic music, which is originated from the music for church？ ceremonies, has a profound impact on musical culture of human beings. During clarifying the developing process of the polyphonic music in the Middle Ages, this paper makes a research into its deeper origin from the perspective of musical phenomenon, exploring its cultural context and formation motivation for its emergence and development. Furthermore, this paper probes into the influences caused by the polyphonic music in the Middle Age on the western musical culture and its important impact on musical theory, creation and performance.
