Functional Equivalence Theory and Standards in the English Translation of Chinese Public Signs

常见公示语英译错误的根本原因在于对译语与源语之间的动态对等,意义对等与形式对等之间的关系处理不当。公示语翻译应以功能对等为基础,厘清形式对等、意义对等、效果对等三个层次的关系,遵循《公共服务领域英文译写规范》系列国家标准。

According to the theory of functional equivalence, the prime cause for the mistakes of English translation of Chinese public signs can be attributed to the improper treatment of the dynamic equivalence, meaning equivalence and formal equivalence between Chinese public signs and English public signs. To solve the problem, three translation principles are put forward, that is, achieving functional equivalence between the Chinese public signs and English public signs, clarifying the relationship among equivalence in form, equivalence in meaning and equivalence in effect, and following the national standards put forward in＂Guidelines for the Use of English in Public Service Areas＂.
