Characters that are"good for nothing" form an important image group in the romantic literature, with the uselessness for the reality and the pursuit for the ideal life as its essential characteristics. In this sense,Winkle belongs to the category of characters that are "good for nothing". However,In European romantic literature, such figures are characterized by their aristocratic, spiritual, and melancholy traits, whereas Winkle represents an essential figure of American romantic literature because of his civility, secularism, and optimism. Studying the image evolution of characters that are"good for nothing"as is represented by Rip Van Winkle on the part of American romantic literature can help to analyze the features that American romantic literature inherits from the European romantic literary tradition, and highlight the uniqueness of American romantic literature on the other hand.
