Objective To evaluate the effect of peer education on self-management ability and complications in cancer patients with peripherally inserted central catheter( PICC) so as to provide basis for improving self-care ability. Methods A total of 90 cancer patients with PICC were chosen by convenience sampling as the subjects and then divided into an observation group and a control group. The control group was given routine discharge guidance during the intermittent period. The observation group was given peer education in addition to that given to the control group. Follow up for 3 months, the self-management ability and the complications of the two groups were compared. Results After one month and three months of intervention, the scores of each dimension of the PICC self-management scale of the patients in the observation group were higher than those in the control group( P〈0.05). The incidence of complications in the observation group was lower within 3 months than the control group( P〈0.05). Conclusions Peer education can improve the selfmanagement ability and reduce the incidence of complications of cancer patients with PICC.
