麦都思并非《各国消息》的创刊者

Walter Henry Medhurst: Not the Founder of News of All Nations

《各国消息》是鸦片战争前在广州刊行的一份中文月刊。由于出版时间短，存世极少，学者难以窥其原貌。因此，关于这个刊物的论述，在中国报刊史、新闻史和出版史的论著中，往往不大准确，甚至讹说相传。如，麦都思为《各国消息》的创刊者，即为传至迄今之讹说。而实际上，麦都思并非《各国消息》的创刊者，其真正的创刊者应为在华外国报商或在华自由派商人。

News of All Nations was a Chinese monthly published in Guangzhou before the Opium War. It was difficult for scholars to restore its original appearance since it was published for a short period of time and there were few handed down. Therefore, descriptions of this publication were often inaccurate and even erroneous in the history of Chinese newspapers, journalism and publishing. For instance, Walter Henry Medhurst was said to be the founder of News of All Nations. As a matter of fact, it was the misinformation passed down to the present, Its founder should be a foreign newspaper publisher or a liberal businessman in China, instead of Walter Henry Medhurst.
