The Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology excavated 273 tombs dating to the Han and Tang dynasties between 2011 and 2014 as a salvage project for the second phase construction inside the Wankecheng city in Chang'an district. Among them, M21 is a large single-chambered tomb with a long sloping tomb path and three ventilation shafts. The tombs has been seriously looted, yet still yielded many relics. In particular, a pottery camel was found with a bag on its back on which a group of exotic figures was molded, which is of great significance to the study of cultural communications between China and the West.
