The Layout of Frontier Defense from Guangdong and Guangxi and the Resettlement of Liu Yongfu after the Sino-French War

中法战争后,入越作战清军陆续撤兵回界,筹办边防善后成为当务之急,如何妥当安置边员却令边省大吏颇感棘手。原本两广总督张之洞拟以苏元春、冯子材、唐景崧三人为核心构建战后两广边防体系,另以刘永福驻扎边界或边外牵制法军,无奈各员思虑不尽一致。刘永福的位置尤令清政府踌躇不定,最终只得匆匆将其内迁。张之洞兼顾两广的边防布局至此基本落空,遗留下的以督办大臣办理边防的局面,则成为战后二十年间粤越、桂越边务筹办的基本格局。

It was imperative to organize the border defense when the combat troops of the Qing government withdrew after the Sino-French war,but the resettlement officials had made frontier official prickly. Zhang Zhidong who was Governor-General of Guangdong and Guangxi originally planned to build the frontier defense system from Guangdong and Guangxi with the core of Su Yunchun,Feng Zicai and Tang Jingsong,but the various people though inconsistencies.In addition,Liu Yongfu had planned to be stationed at the border or outside to contain the French which was particularly dithering on the Qing government. The border arrangement of Zhang Zhidong failed to materialize in the end,but the pattern of the Sino-Vietnamese border affairs was formed.
