黑旗军在越南与其他武装作战时和抗法过程中,实力不断强大。其士兵除来自驻地和招编的其他武装外,大多数是从国内招募,主要来自两广地区。这些地区尚武气息浓厚,民众有从军传统。由于黑旗军官兵军纪严明,军饷较为优厚,官兵生活有一定保障,吸引了大量贫困破产民众投军。部分士民出于对侵略者的愤恨和爱国主义热情,也选择参加黑旗军。

The black flag army attracted a large number of impoverished bankrupt people because of its Strict discipline,generous pay and relatively stable life Some people participated in the flag army out of the anger and patriotism.
