A Study of the Symbiotic Relationship between Parents and Children in the Fictions of Henry James

随着19世纪工业化时代的到来,亨利·詹姆斯意识到亲子关系在商业社会中出现了危机,父母受到金钱或地位的诱惑,往往把孩子当作实现自己利益的工具,因此亲子关系变成了病态的"共生"关系,孩子成为父母私欲的牺牲品,失去了个人的完整人格和自由精神。本文以亨利·詹姆斯的小说《小学生》《波士顿人》《罗德里克·哈德逊》为主要文本,探讨"共生"关系及其对孩子造成的不良后果,从而为建立一种良好的亲子关系提供借鉴。

With the development of industrialism,Henry James realized that the parents-children relationship was faced with crisis in the commercialized society,and that,the parents were attracted by money or position,and usually took children as instrument for their own good. Therefore,a symbiotic relationship emerged between parents and children. Children became the victim of parental desire,passive,submissive,and they completely lost their individuality and freedom. This thesis,taking The Pupil,The Bostonians and Roderick Hudson as major texts,intends to study the symbiotic relationship between parents and children and its consequences on children,in order to shed light on how to establish a sound relationship between parents and children.
