中国美术史中的疑年研究名著,前有汪宗衍的《岭南画人疑年录》,后有汪世清的《艺苑疑年丛谈》。疑年问题最主要的是生卒年问题,"年代的记载是历史记载的一个基本条件,年代不明,就弄不清历史的进程。年代错乱,就会造成历史研究上的混乱。"疑年考证可以更好地解决我们对艺术家的作品界定,有助于我们了解艺术家的社会关系与交游以及便于了解艺术家在艺术道路上不断求索的过程。

Well- known research works on the doubtful dates in Chinese history of fine arts include Wang Zongyan＇s Lingnan Huaren Yinian Lu （Records of the Doubtful Dates of Lingnan Painters ） and Wang Shiqing＇s Yiyuan Yinian Congtan （Essays on the Doubtful Dates in the Realm of Arts and Literature）. The crucial issue of the doubtful dates is the dates of birth and death, so that ＂the record of the dates is a basic condition of historical record. If the dates are uncertain, the process of history is uncertain. A wrong date will cause a confusion to the historical studies＂. Studies on doubtful dates can help us to better define the works of the artists, which will further assist us in the understanding of the artists in temps of their social relationships, friendships, and continuous exploration process on the artistic path.
