人品决定诗品,李义府善于投机钻营,无论是政治顺意还是仕途偃蹇,皆充满阿谀逢迎之姿、投机钻营之态;与其人品相适应,李义府的诗作是其仕途兴衰的"晴雨表",是政治际遇的自画像。政治上投机钻营,在仕途飞升、志得意满之时,文学上主要表现为对"知遇者"的感恩戴德,诗尾往往"曲终于谀";在仕途不顺、偃蹇受阻之时,文学上主要表现为对朝廷充满希冀与内心的哀愍,诗尾往往"曲终于怜"。李义府的"颂体诗"是龙朔变体的一个重要内容。
