Chinese Traditional Philosophy of Will and Its Contemporary Value

在我国传统文化中,有两条意志理论的发展脉络:一是儒家的道德意志,试图通过主体的人格完善实现王道政治;二是道家的实践意志,强调以意志和人力克服巨大的困难,以改造客观世界。随着两汉文化政策的转向,儒家与权力结盟,获得独尊地位,道德意志日盛而实践意志日消,反躬自省有余而刚健有为不足。今天我们要建设社会主义新文化,需要重新发现传统意志理论的价值,吸收更多儒家之外的积极文化因子。

There were two clues in the Chinese traditional philosophy.One of them was the Confucius philosophy of will which achieves their political work by personality perfection of the subject and the other was the Taoism philosophy of will which intends to change the objective world by means of the training of the mental strength and human practice.With the direction change of cultural policies,the ruler of the Han Dynasty changed their policies,formed an alliance with Confucians and obtained unique power.Thus the Confucius will of virtues became more and more dominant while the Taoist will of practice became depressed with each passing day.Nowadays there is need to rediscover the values in the Chinese traditional philosophies and absorb more positive cultural factors in addition to the Confucius ones in order to build a new socialist culture.
