Objective To explore the effects of electroacupuncture at Baihui and Yintang acupoints on delirium and emergence agitation in neonatal rats after sevoflurane exposure. Methods Fifty male Sprague-Dawley rats aged 7 days were randomly divided into five groups of sevoflurane,pre-,middle-and post-anesthesia electroacupuncture and pseudo-acupuncture,10 in each group. Electroacupuncture treatment with constant current was given for 30 min to the animals except pseudo-acupuncture group which received placebo treatment. The frequency, time and intensity of delirium and emergence agitation in the post-anesthesia rats were observed and the awakening time was recorded. Results Compared to the groups of sevoflurane and pseudo-acupuncture,there was no statistical difference in the frequency, time and intensity of delirium and emergence agitation in the groups of pre-and middle-anesthesia electroacupuncture( P〈0. 05),however,the differences were statistically significant in the post-anesthesia electroacupuncture group( P〈0. 05).Conclusion Post-anesthesia electroacupuncture can significantly reduce the occurrence of delirium and emergence agitation, and increase the awaking time in rats after neonatal sevoflurane exposure. Therefore,it plays an important role in sedation during awaking time.
