The Aesthetic Significance of Glass in the Early Days of Modern Architecture

现代主义建筑中玻璃的应用与建筑的现代化过程交织在一起,伴随着经济和社会制度上的重大变革,现代建筑一开始就埋有乌托邦理想、道德批判的种子,是新的审美精神的集中反映。文章试图通过对玻璃这一新的建筑材料在19世纪到20世纪初的现代主义建筑上的应用,梳理出附着在玻璃——这一重要的现代建筑材料之一——之上的审美意义、伦理价值与社会意义的变迁,探讨现代建筑进程中审美、社会与材料科技之间的相互推动,进而追溯出从玻璃上折射和反映出的人类现代审美精神的生成与发展,以及人类认识世界、改造世界永不停息的脚步。

The application of glass in modernist architecture is interwoven with the progress of modernization in architecture.Modern architecture reflects a new aesthetic spirit which develops with the significant changes in economic and social system and embodies Utopian idealism and moral criticism. Through describing the application of glass,a new building material,in modernist architecture from the 19 th century to the early 20 th century,this paper presents the aesthetic sense,ethical value and significance of social changes attached to glass,one major material of modern architecture and discusses the mutual promotion among aestheticism,society and material science in modern architecture development,and then traces back the genesis and evolution of modern aesthetic spirit reflected by glass as a good showcase of man＇s endeavor to understand and change the world.
