Commandments and Time Measurement——A Focus on Master Yi Xing of the Tang Dynasty

唐代人才辈出,一行以民间沙门的身份参与到国家历法的制定,为佛教与科技的关系提供一个样本,本文以此为基点,进行一些探讨。文章主要从三个方面进行考察,首先考察一行之前,佛教在天文历法方面的积累;其次是从一行的师承探究其学历法的动机;最后是从僧人修持角度看待计时方法的意义,同时考察一行制历的目的,以期能对"释门制历"这一事件作出更深入的研究。

The Tang dynastyis famous for the galaxy of talented people. Yi Xing participated in making the national calendar as a folk Shramana,which provides a specimen for the relationship between Buddhism and science and technology. Starting from this point, this paper makes some explorations in three aspects： Buddhist achievements in astronomy and calendar before Yi Xing, the motivation of Yi Xing in studying astronomy andcalendar, and the significance of time measurement bythe monk＇s practice. It also investigates thepurpose of the Yi Xing＇ participation in the work for the further researchof Buddhist involvement in time measurement.
