This paper subverts the surface identity- of Lilias Papagay as a spirit medium,through a thorough analysis of the image of A. S. Byatt＇s novella ＂The Conjugial Angel＂, the second part of her neo-Vietorian novel Angels and lnsects, and points out that she is both a spirit medium and ＂counter-spirit medium ＂ This paradoxical identity contributes greatly to the development of the plot as well as the highlight of the theme, and the change of her identity also shows Byatt＇s perpetual care for women＇s lives.
