The English Translation and Ideology of Mao Tse-tung's Poems during the Cultural Revolution

从组织方式、出版背景、翻译形式等译本外部因素以及文本语言特征对国内文革时期的官方定本与同时期西方出版的各代表译作进行考察,进而厘清意识形态在翻译过程中的表现方式。作为集体翻译成果的官方定本在内容上忠实原文,政治意识形态操纵痕迹较重,而西方的译作数量大,翻译形式丰富,译者的自主性强。同时也分析了指导译者行为的形式、习俗与信念等因素,这些因素和意识形态的政治表现方式合力造成了毛泽东诗词译文的多样性。

This paper compares the official English version of Mao Tse-tung's poems during the Cultural Revolution with the western versions from external factors, such as ways of organization, publishing backgrounds and translating methods, as well as internal aspects like language features, so as to explore the power of ideological factors over translation. The official version abides a prudent pursue of faithfulness, whereas the western translations are diversified in free style. The paper also analyses the forms, customs and faiths which govern translators' action, together with the political ideological control, to bring diversified translations of Mao Tse-tung's poems.
