This essay examines the distinct features and connotations of the Western lyric, a concept both illuminated and obscured by theories of the Chinese lyric tradition. Through a close analysis of a number of interlinked poems, mostly in English, from the early modern and modern period, the essay outlines two endemic features of the lyric that have not been fully discussed: first,a simultaneously analytical and integrative approach toward the mind; Second, a built-in inclination to be addressed to a person or thing other than the self, functioning as a soliloquy.
