Historical annotations made by Lishan and Wuchen to the Wenxuan (Literary Selection) were mixed up at one point, and their orginal texts were lost long ago. Fortunately, the poem Xijing Fu in document P.2528, which dates from the Yonglong era (680-681 CE) of the Tang dynasty and was unearthed from the Dunhuang Library Cave, has been proved to be the original version of Lishan's annotation. This manuscript could be of great help to researchers attempting to clarify the evolution of later editions of the Wenxuan. Based on newly unearthed Dunhuang manuscripts, the Hong'an and Zheng'an versions of the first volume of the Wenxuan held in Sakashi Shinji, Japan have been critically reappraised, to the conclusion that while the Zheng'an version is highly consistent with Lishan's annotation, the Hong'an version shows clear characteristics of Wuchen's style, though it also contains some typical passages derived from Lishan. Researchers also noticed that there is a fair amount of text unidentifiable as the work of either Lishan or Wuchen, which the authors infer to be the result of Japanese scholars' research on the document.
