为了反拨第二国际思想家及斯大林时期哲学教科书体系对马克思主义做出的科学化、实证化、机械化的解读,西方马克思主义强调马克思主义的哲学性质,着力于文化批判。与"正统"马克思主义思想家对宗教做还原式的理解即强调经济基础对宗教的决定性作用不同,西方马克思主义更多地对宗教的相对独立性给予关注即从文化层面考察宗教的属性、特征和功能。

Unlike the＂Orthodox＂Marxist thinkers’ reductive understanding of religion,which emphasizes the decisive role of the economic base on religion, Western Marxism pays more attention to the relative independence of religion, examines the attributes characteristicsand functions of religion from the cultural level.
