A Study on English Euphemism from the Perspective of Politeness Principle

从礼貌原则的视角分析英语委婉语的使用,对于以英语为第二语言的学习者来说,通过理解和把握英语委婉语的语用特征,了解委婉语使用动机和遵循的原则,解读交际对象的话语,可避免交际失误。在交际中尊重他人,把握说话的分寸,顾全面子,回避忌讳,有助于避免交际过程中产生的不愉快以及不必要的冲突,以提高英语语言学习者的跨文化交际能力。

This paper analyzes the use of English euphemism from the perspective of politeness principle. For learners who study English as a second language, it is very important to understand and grasp the pragmatic characteristics of English euphemism,the motivation and principles of euphemism. It is also very important to interpret the communicative partner’s discourse correctly,so as to avoid miscommunication. In communication,we should respect each other,pay more attention to the accuracy of one’s speech,learn how to save the face of both sides in communication politely and appropriately,avoid taboos and unpleasant and unnecessary conflicts in the process of communication, so as to improve the second language learners’ intercultural communicative competence.
