摘要
It is significant that the degree or formality is expected in communication. This article will present this kind of data whichenable us to obverse the process of variation at work in the speech of an competent speaker. The data discussed in this paper pre-sented how speakers not only apply‘principles of grammar'in order to produce what they want to say, but also‘rules for speak-ing',which facilitate them to vary their speech to fit the immediate situation.
