TV People, a short novel by Murakami Haruki reveals the existential predicaments of modem urbanites in an elec- tronic-media-dominated era. The author portrays two worlds, a traditional paper world featuring books and magazines, and an electronic world typified by TV, telephone, etc. Immersed in such worlds, the protagonist is transformed in an all-round man- ner, audio-visually and viscerally. The paper presents the sense of alienation and anxiety of individuals evoked by the intrusive information and their gradual perceptual subjugation to such an electronic age through an analysis of metaphors of medium symbols and bodily perception and expounds the author's discovery of new vistas for literary creation in a new age.
