If someone is crying in an attempt to fake remorse or empathy, we say he is shedding "crocodile tears". But how and why did we start pegging insincere displays of emotion to the toothy reptiles? According to ancient Western legends, when a crocodile peeped at its prey such as humans and livestock, it often shed tears and looked so sad, causing the prey to lose vigilance with its sudden attack. At this moment, the crocodile would swallow its prey.
