巴别尔小说的情节设置具有明显的悖论特征,表现为两个或多个不同情节大相径庭,相邻而现,形成美丑相见、明暗交替的艺术效果。这在《骑兵军》中表现为浪漫的诗意描写与残酷的自然呈现前后对照,在《敖德萨故事》中表现为热烈的暴力叙述与幽默的温情眷念明暗对比;在《我的鸽子窝的故事》中表现为鲜亮的叙述光线与内敛的心理暗影相互交替。这种巧妙整合对立情节的悖论性,与巴别尔的世界观和生活观密不可分,既体现出他不同于官方主流的伦理身份与自我认同,也提升了20世纪早期俄罗斯小说的表现手段和叙事诗学。

Plot setting of Babel’s novels reflects an obvious paradox,which shows that two or more different images form an artistic effect of beauty and ugliness,light and dark. And it forms permanent novel poetics and aesthetic value. In Cavalry Army, the paradox is shown as a contrast between po-etic description and natural appearance; in Odessa Stories, i t s shown as lence narration and family love; in The Story of My Dove Nest, i t s shown as a juxtaposition between the narrative light and psychological shadow. In one word,this paradox is closely related to his world view and life view. It shows Babels ethical identity and self-identity which is different from the main-stream, and partly improves the artistic means and narrative poetics of early Russian novels in early 20th century.
