On the Temporal Narrative Mode of Morrison's A Mercy and the Maturity of Black Women

莫里森在《慈悲》中采用了现在和过去交替的时间叙述模式,将小说情节切分成一个个独立的人物故事,以黑人女奴佛罗伦斯的经历作为现在的故事,前后切分为六节,以其他五位人物的经历作为过去的故事,让现在和过去更替出现,这种交替式的时间叙述模式旨在模糊故事发生的物理时间,使读者聚焦人物的心理时间,尤其是黑人女性的内心成长。通过这种模糊的时间叙述模式,佛罗伦斯从自卑到重生再到觉醒的心路历程实现了前景化。黑人女性的成长一方面凸显了她们的话语权和书写能力,另一方面表达了莫里森对黑人女性命运的独特关怀以及对于造成她们悲剧命运的贩奴历史罪恶的揭露。

Morrison creates a special temporal mode in A Mercy with the present events and pastones alternating with each other. She splits the plot into Florens^ experience as the present eventand the other five characters（ stories as the past events and narrates the present and the past alter-natively. This alternate temporal narrative mode aims to obscure the physical timso as to make the readers focus on the psychological growth of the characteblack women in particular. By employing this obscure temporal narrative mode, Morrison foregrounds Florens’ psychological journey from self-contempt to revival and self-awareness.black women on one hand highlights their discourse rights and extraordinary writing ability, and on the other hand shows Morrison（s special concern about the fate of black women and her severe criti-cism of slave trade in American history which is the root of black women＇s tragic fate.
