Translating Specialized Terms:Misconceptions Caused by Dictionary Meanings

在术语译介过程中,词典中术语所用词条的现有义项是导致原文中术语所指意义被误读的原因,也是导致译入目标语言中的新术语被误解的原因。根据术语首次使用者对术语所用词条赋予的新的定义,以及术语使用的语境来确定术语的所指,并在译文中再现这一新的能指和所指关系,是走出术语解读误区的重要路径。

The dictionary meanings of the words used in specialized terms act as a barrier not only to translators in their attempts to determine the meaning signified by those terms,but also to the readers of the translated versions of these terms in their effort to understand these terms.To overcome this obstacle,translators of specialized terms must rely on the definitions given by the first user of these terms as well as the context in which these terms are used,to establish the meanings signified by these terms,and subsequently to reconstruct this new relationship between the signifier and the signified in the target text.
