Hu Sher Artists’ Society was the most influential art organization in the early 20th-century Beijing, founded by Jin Kaifan, son of artist Jin Cheng, who had created the Society of Chinese Painting. Its publication was Hu Sher Art Magazine, which was committed to promoting traditional Chinese art. However, besides publicizing ancient and modern traditional Chinese calligraphy and paintings, it also introduced quite a number of Japanese paintings. It was by this periodical that Japanese painters were introduced for the first time to China. So, Hu Sher Art Magazine played an indispensable role in the modern history of Sino-Japanese art exchanges, which we can never ignore. This paper attempts to restore events to their specifc historical contexts, and discusses details of Sino-Japanese traditional painting exchanges and the impacts to each country’s painting community by original text reading, and a combined approach of images, literature, history and sociology.
