The City and Social Life of Guangzhou in the Middle 19th Century:A Comparative Interpretation of Chinese and English Newspapers Based on The Grand Ceremony in Guangzhou and Modern Missionaries

随着第一次鸦片战争的结束,中国逐步沦为西方列强的半殖民地,广州等通商口岸城市开始了近代化转型的过程。近代岭南报刊对19世纪中叶的广州城市与社会生活进行了多方位报道,城市发展与畸形消费在报道中得到集中展现,城市化进程中凸显的社会矛盾与城市管理问题,以及日益加剧的中西交流与文化融合的难题,也得到中英文报刊的重视,并由此形塑了19世纪中叶广州的城市形象。

With the end of the first Opium War,China gradually became a semi-colony of the Western powers.Guangzhou and other trading port cities began the process of modernization and transformation. Modern Lingnan newspapers and periodicals covered Guangzhou city and social life in various aspects in the middle of the 19 th century. Urban development and abnormal consumption were concentrated in the reports. Social contradictions and urban management problems were highlighted in the process of urbanization. As well as the increasingly serious problems of communication and cultural integration between China and the West,has also been paid attention to by the Chinese and English newspapers,and thus shaped the city image of Guangzhou in the middle of the 19 th century.
