The Red Thread is an Australian novel inspired by a 19 th century Chinese literary classic. The intertextual relation between the two texts is self-evident for the story is embroidered with passages printed in red, quoted from the classic Chinese love story. The novel is well accepted in the west but is accused of an oriental discourse by Chinese critics for its misreading of Chinese culture. This paper takes a transcultural perspective and regards The Red Thread as a transcultural novel. In the light of Harold Bloom's intertextual theory, it analyses the rewriting process from Six Chapters of a Floating Life to The Red Thread and discusses the transcultural writing strategy, its thematic meaning and the cultural stand of the transcultural writer.
