The production of Buddhist figures in qingbai porcelain was a significant development at the Jingdezhen kilns during the Yuan Dynasty. This paper investigates the sudden and short-lived appearance of large porcelain Buddhist sculptures in China under Mongol rule and places it in the historical and religious context of the time. It will be argued that the manufacture of these impressive Buddhist sculptures was a direct result of Mongol patronage of Tibetan Buddhism and the Jingdezhen kilns and that porcelain Buddhist images were used for Tibetan Buddhist rituals and ceremonies at the Yuan imperial court.
