The development and implementation of the policy of Combination of Medical Care and Social Care (CMCSC) has led to the design and construction of care facilities according to policy guidelines. In China, the increase in the aging population, the improvement of quality of life, and the needs of the aging market have required more buildings to be developed under this policy. As such, it is critical to understand the meanings of CMCSC and its application in architectural design. This issue explores the aging environment in Western Canada through five articles, including this introductory article, that discuss five architectural examples in Alberta and British Columbia. The first section of this article discusses my understanding of CMCSC from the perspectives of foundation, meaning, and goals. The second section introduces the structure of this issue, seeking to explore the associations between medical care and social care within the context of the built environment and to inspire architects, designers, and developers to create more suitable living environments for elderly people in China in order to enhance their well-being.
