The domestic academia pays scarce attention to the representation of the Orient in Orlando.Virginia Woolf exhibits an obvious Orientalist mentality in the journals and correspondence with her lover Vita Sackville-West regarding her visit to the East. And she weaves this mentality into the novel Orlando,which, by delineating Orlando’s prejudice and superiority over Turkish landscapes and the Gypsies in Turkey, and by portraying Orlando’s desire for motherland, highlights Orlando’s racial and national identity as a white Anglo-Saxon, and degrades Turkey into a cultural Other. Orlando’ s colonial vision, to some degree, alludes to the political confrontation between England and Turkey in the 1920s, disclosing the novel’s geopolitical dimension and revealing Woolf’s involvement in England’s imperial politics.
