Annotations in English Versions of Li Yü's Shi Er Lou: A Diachronically Comparative Analysis

文章对李渔短篇小说集《十二楼》三种英译本的注释开展历时对比研究,试图通过注释类型和内容的差别,揭示不同时期的翻译策略及其背后的社会历史背景和文化交流状况。研究发现:在总共7类注释中,从最早的德庇时译本到最近的韩南译本,文化类和文献类注释显著增加,知识类和翻译类注释则显著减少;三个译本在注释内容和类型上的差异,反映了处在中英文化交流早期、冷战时期和全球化时代的三位译者根据各自时代的文化交流特点而选择的、分别以"帮助了解""促进沟通"和"求专求深"为导向的翻译阐释策略。基于调查结果,文章指出:每个时代都有适应自身文化交流特点和需要的翻译原则和策略,翻译注释也应与时俱进,根据前人的经验和当下文化交流的形势,确定符合新时代需要的注释原则和策略;另外,深度化是典籍翻译的总体趋势,当前的典籍外译应坚持深度化原则,积极探索既有文化和学术深度又有吸引力的注释策略,有效推动典籍作品和中国文化走向世界。

As a comparative study of the annotations in the three English versions of Li Yū＇s short-storycollection Shi Er Lou （Twelve Towers）, this paper attempts, through the differences of annotations among thethree versions in taxonomy and content, to reveal the respective translation strategies of the literary collectionin their different times , the socio-historical background and cultural exchange. Statistics show significantincrease in cultural and academic annotations, in contrast to remarkable decrease in informative andtranslational ones. The variations reveal the three translators＇ selection of different annotating strategies thatare oriented respectively to “enabling understanding” on early stages of Chinese-UK cultural exchange, “facilitating communication冶 during the Cold War, and “ pursuing thickness” in the era of globalization.Finally, the paper pin points that translational annotations should keep up with the time; and that thicktranslation proves to be a general trend in the translation of Chinese classics, and translators should exploreannotating strategies to better facilitate the international promotion of Chinese classics and culture.
