[Purposes] This paper aims to explore scientific rationality and possible inadequacies of academic journal clout index( CI) to help decision-makers,publishers,and authors to evaluate the influence of academic journals and predict the development potential of journals. [Methods] Taking the data of ten journals' indexes from Annual Report for Chinese Academic Journal Impact factors( Natural Science)( 2015-2017) as objects,we ranked the journals according to every journal' s comprehensive principal component score( F) by principal component analysis in IBMSPSS software. Results of F-ranking and CI-ranking were compared and the differences were analyzed. The Spearman rank correlation coefficient was applied to compare the correlation between fCIand F with each of the ten journals' indexes. [Findings] The F has closer correlation with the ten journals' indexes than those with fCI.Immediacy index has lower correlation coefficient with both F and fCIthan the other indexes, while the correlation coefficient with F is higher than that with fCI. [Conclusions] The F can better represent the ten journals' indexes than fCI. Thus F-ranking is much closer to the level of journals reflected by all ten journals' indexes. F-ranking has advantage of fCI-ranking to showjournals' reaction rate and citation intensity, and to indicate journals' latest development trend and vitality. Immediacy index of journals should be considered when the CI-ranking is consulted.
