The "new folk song movement"began in March 1958,starting from Mao Zedong 's advocacy of collecting folk songs at the Chengdu Conference, followed by the vigorous propaganda and by the literary and art circles and the positive response of local governments at all levels, the upsurge of collecting and creating folk songs rapidly arose in the country, and then developed into a nationwide huge mass movement. Mao's criticism of "The Red Flag Ballads",an anthology of new folk songs, was the turning point of the movement, and his conversation at the Zhengzhou conference in March 1959 heralded the end of the new folk song movement. Mao's early experiences in Peking University, his practice of folk song in his revolutionary career, and his idea for constructing new poem are the important preconditions for the occurrence of the " new folk song movement",while MAO's deepening reflection on the new poem construction is the key to the ending of the new folk song movement.
