A Study of Yao Yong's Official Career in Southern Song Dynasty

南宋江湖派诗人姚镛的仕历,古今文献的记载较为疏略,仅知他系越州剡溪人,曾任县尉、吉州判官,后擢为赣守,因忤帅臣而贬谪衡阳。考其所著《雪篷稿》及其交游的著作,可探知他还任过万安县令、赣州通判等职,其被劾贬衡阳,官方与民间有着截然不同的看法。某些文献关于他的仕宦记述有诸多失误,包括"掌教黄岩县学"之误载。

The official career of Yao Yong, a travelling poet in the Southern Song dynasty, is not well documented in both ancient and modern literature. Only known to be born in Shanxi Yuezhou, he successively served as a county captain, Panguang （an assistant to the chief local official） in Jizhou, and later promoted to the post of prefect in Ganzhou. Disobedient to a certain commander-in-chief, he was relegated to Hengyang. Examining his monograph Poems Written in Xuepeng and his friends’ works, we can see that he also served as a magistrate of Wan’an county and Tongpan （an official under the county magistrate who administers lawsuit, etc.） in Ganzhou, and was later impeached and demoted to Hengyang. There are totally different versions about his official career between the government and the folks. In some documents, there exist many errors concerning his official record, including the untaken post of “being in charge of Huangyan County School”.
