As the main genre of Australian nationalism writings, the fictions of Australian bush realism are the authentic portraits and sketches of Australian bush life in the harsh bush surroundings. This paper, based on the close-reading of bush writings by Henry Lawson, Joseph Furphy and Steele Rudd, focuses on the analysis of the "madness images". It is argued that by representing what the bushmen suffered and experienced in the harsh bush environment, the writers objectively expressed the fact that Australian bushmen are prone to go mad in struggling for survival in 1880s. Through the representation, the paper constructs the basic argument that Australia is a nation built upon bush, and Australian national identity is somehow forged through the madness images by the Australian bushmen in the harsh environment.
