Diabetes is now a pandemic and shows no signs of abatement in China. Type 2 diabetes（T2 D） results from the combination of insulin resistance and a relative deficiency of insulin production, which may be induced by a number of factors. In this seminar, we review the pathophysiology of this disorder, with particular attention to genetic defects, lifestyle factors, endocrine disruptors, and gut microbiota in Chinese.
