海外中国近代史学术论著翻译探析--从The Making of the Republican Citizen一书的汉译谈起

Translation of Overseas Modern Chinese Monographs—— A Case Study on Translation of The Making of the Republican Citizen

海外史学著作的汉译有助于国内学者了解海外研究动态、繁荣国内史学研究,但是此类著作的翻译有其特有的翻译难点。以The Making of the Republican Citizen为例,首先从文体学和语料库角度分析了该书的文体特征并指出译者在保持原文文体风格的同时应避免使用过于强烈的个人文体。随后具体分析了该书汉译过程中的难点,即专有名词的回译,通过实例分析指出人名、地名和机构名称等专有名词应采用探究式翻译法。

Translation of overseas modern Chinese monographs will help domestic researchers gain access to overseas research trends and bring prosperity to domestic historical research.Translation of such monographs,however,encounters particular difficulties inherited in it.First of all,this paper analyzes the stylistics from the perspectives of stylistics and corpora on the basis of translation of The Making of the Republican Citizen,pointing out that translator should try to maintain the style of original texts in the translation and avoid personal style in the translation.And then this paper analyzes the difficulties in the English-Chinese translation,i.e.the back translation of proper noun.This paper concludes that translators should adopt the exploratory translation strategy when translating such proper nouns as names of people,places and institutions.
