近代英文期刊对中国典籍的译介研究--以《明心宝鉴》为例

On the Introduction and Translation of Chinese Classics Published in the English Periodicals:A Case Study of Ming Xin Bao Jian

目前学界关于《明心宝鉴》的翻译研究仅限于西语版本,事实上英文期刊《印中搜闻》在19世纪初就已刊登过米怜译介《明心宝鉴》的文章,后经《中国丛报》再度刊载。着眼于米怜对《明心宝鉴》的译介,结合《印中搜闻》与《中国丛报》刊载典籍英译的特征与倾向,以翻译描写的观念考察米怜译介《明心宝鉴》的特点、目的、文化立场及影响。研究发现:米怜译介风格统一,文章囊括原作的内容梗概、风格特点、片段翻译等重要信息;米怜译介《明心宝鉴》的原因多重:整理中国重要典籍、促进汉语学习、考察中国文化,但根本原因则是促进传教工作;《印中搜闻》与《中国丛报》对译文的刊登与转载,反映出在特定历史背景下,翻译中国典籍的意义与实用价值。

Current studies on the translation of Ming Xin Bao Jian merely resort to its Spanish version. In fact, the Indo-Chinese Gleaner , one of English journals in modern times, has published the introduction and translation of this book written by Milne in the early 19th century. This article was also published in the Chinese Repository for the second time. This research, basing itself on the concept of descriptive translation, with the features and tendencies of these two English journals in selecting and translating Chinese classics taken into consideration, probes into the features, purposes, cultural stances, and influences of Milne’s choice in introducing and translating Ming Xin Bao Jian . Conclusions are made that Milne follows a particular style in introducing and translating Ming Xin Bao Jian , involving a sketch of the original book and several translations; there are several reasons for Milne conducting this work： combing important Chinese classics, facilitating the study of the Chinese language, and observing Chinese culture, and the primary goal is to promote Christian missions; Indo-Chinese Gleaner ’s publishing and the Chinese Repository ’s republishing of it imply the significance and practical value of translating Chinese classics under a particular historical context.
